2023 - Silo Art Factory
In January, I ventured to Greece, leaving Athens behind for the older capital of Nafplion—a port city draped in history. Perched on the Peloponnesian coast, Nafplion has been shaped by Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottomans, each wave of power leaving behind fortresses and fragments that now quietly fade into the modern cityscape.
One morning, I stumbled upon a remarkable place: the Silo Art Factory, Stelios Marangos’s workshop. Nestled among farmlands with distant mountains framing the view, it’s a haven of reclaimed time, an art-filled sanctuary built from discarded materials, guarded by sculptures that seem to watch over the past.
Inside, Stelios has gathered an assembly of relics—rusted cars, well-worn furniture, objects steeped in a patina of lives lived. These are more than artifacts; they are echoes of forgotten stories. I lingered, tempted to bring a piece back, yet found only a handwritten note with the artist’s number.
Stelios’s life felt like a whispered defiance of convention, a gentle stand against the rush of time. In his world, art and purpose unfold at their own pace, reminding me that meaning often resides beyond the hurried path, in places shaped by quiet devotion and the courage to simply be.
